What is Jianpu?

Jianpu (简谱) is a numbered musical notation system used primarily in Asia. Numbers 1-7 represent notes Do through Ti, with 0 representing rests.

Supported Formats

.musicxml: Standard MusicXML files
.mxl: Compressed MusicXML (MuseScore, Finale, etc.)
.xml: Generic XML files in MusicXML format

Jianpu Notation

Basic Notes:

1 = Do (C)
2 = Re (D)
3 = Mi (E)
4 = Fa (F)
5 = Sol (G)
6 = La (A)
7 = Ti (B)
0 = Rest

Octave Markers:

' (dot) = Raise one octave (e.g., 1' = high Do)
, (comma) = Lower one octave (e.g., 1, = low Do)
Multiple markers can stack (e.g., 1'' = two octaves higher)

Accidentals:

# = Sharp (e.g., 1# = Do#)
b = Flat (e.g., 3b = Mib)
x = Double sharp
bb = Double flat

Duration Markers:

_ = Hold/continuation for one beat
- = Extended hold/fermata

Measure Structure:

Measures are separated by | bars
Each line represents one voice/staff
Prefix like Q: or P: shows voice/staff (treble or bass)

B: Title/Song Name
D: Key
P: Time Signature
M: Tempo
J: BPM
Z: Composer

FanQie (Jianpu99) Notation

What is Jianpu99?

Jianpu99 is the standard text-based notation format for Jianpu music. It provides a complete specification for representing musical scores in a human-readable text format that can be easily processed and converted between different music notation systems.

File Header (Mandatory Fields):

V: version = Format version identifier (e.g., V: 1.0)
B: title = Piece/Song title
D: key = Key signature (e.g., D: C major or D: G)
P: time_signature = Time signature (e.g., P: 4/4)
M: tempo_marking = Musical tempo marking (e.g., M: Allegro)
J: bpm = Beats per minute (e.g., J: 120)
Z: composer = Composer attribution

Voice/Staff Notation:

Q: Treble/G clef staff (Melody/Right Hand)
P: Bass/F clef staff (Bass/Left Hand)
Multiple Q and P lines represent chord notes in the same staff

Note Symbols (1-7 Scale):

1 = Do (C)
2 = Re (D)
3 = Mi (E)
4 = Fa (F)
5 = Sol (G)
6 = La (A)
7 = Ti (B)
0 = Rest/Silence

Octave Designation:

' (apostrophe) = Raise by one octave (e.g., 1' = high Do)
, (comma) = Lower by one octave (e.g., 1, = low Do)
Multiple markers combine (e.g., 1'' = two octaves up)

Accidentals:

# = Sharp (raises by half step)
b = Flat (lowers by half step)
x = Double sharp
bb = Double flat
Example: 1# = Do#, 3b = Mi-flat

Duration & Rhythm:

Note length determined by spacing and grouping
Space-separated notes within measures
_ = Continuation marker (extends previous note)
- = Extended hold/fermata (musical sustain)

Measure Structure:

| = Measure bar (separates measures)
|| = Final double bar (end of piece)
Each measure contains the notes and symbols for that beat unit
Multiple voice lines can appear between measure groups

Line Organization:

Sequential Q and P lines represent different voices
Blank lines separate rhythmic/structural groups
All voices must align at measure boundaries (|)

📖 How to Convert

MusicXML → Jianpu99

Step 1: Ensure you are in "MusicXML → Jianpu" mode (default)

Step 2: Click the upload area and select your MusicXML or MXL file

Step 3: Review the file metadata displayed (title, composer, key, time signature)

Step 4: Conversion uses default settings:

Output format: FanQie (Jianpu99)
Multi-staff files: All staves combined
Chord symbols: Preserved
Key signature: Original key preserved
Layout: 4 measures per line

Step 5: Click "Convert to Jianpu" to process

Step 6: View the Jianpu99 text output and visualization below

Step 7: Copy the text or download the file for use in other applications

Note: Tied notes are shown with parentheses: (1'. 1'//) in the notation

Jianpu99 → MusicXML

Step 1: Click on "Jianpu → MusicXML" tab at the top

Step 2: Either upload a .txt file or paste your Jianpu99 notation directly

Step 3: Include required metadata at the top of your notation:

V: Version (e.g., V: 1.0)
B: Song title (e.g., B: My Song)
D: Key signature (e.g., D: C)
P: Time signature (e.g., P: 4/4)
J: Tempo in beats per minute (e.g., J: 120)
Z: Composer (optional)

Step 4: Use proper notation format:

Q: Lines for treble clef (standard notation)
P: Lines for bass clef (left hand)
(note1 note2): Parentheses to mark tied notes

Step 5: Click "Convert to MusicXML"

Step 6: Download the MusicXML file or copy the XML content
